Tufa Cast – method used by some Native American silversmiths to create jewelry designs. First the design is hand-carved into the tufa stone (similar to sandstone) using a sharp knife and other tools. Once the design is finished a funnel is carved from the top of the stone to the design and another tufa stone is then tied to the design stone to create a seal. The sterling silver or gold is then heated until the metal is liquid and poured into the tufa cast. Once the piece is removed from the tufa cast, is it filed and polished. The stone is then discarded as the cast can only be used once. There are very few silversmiths who have learned the art of tufa stone casting. Jack and Mary Tom, renowned Navajo silversmiths who have won multiple awards including from the Heard Show and Santa Fe Indian Market, create some of the most beautiful tufa cast pieces available on the market today.
