Hopi people started silversmithing around 1900, later than other tribes of the southwest. Some of the first pieces of Hopi Indian jewelry were concho belts and arm guards. In the late 1930’s Hopi silversmiths developed their own style of Indian jewelry to differentiate from other southwest jewelry styles. Their new overlay style entailed cutting designs, usually water and other Hopi symbols, into the silver with a jeweler’s saw. This design is then soldered to another piece of silver, oxidized to create a dark background, and then polished to either a satin finish or a high shine. To the untrained eye, Hopi jewelry appears simplistic in design. However, the process is very labor intensive and one slip of the saw can render the piece unacceptable to the artist. redrocktrading.com offers beautiful buckles by Hopi silversmith Anderson Koinva.
