Native American silversmiths from the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico are known for their stone-cutting skills. Needlepoint stones are very small, slender stones shaped to a point on each end. Most Zuni Indian jewelry made with turquoise is absent any matrix, the dark veins found in most turquoise as the artist meticulously cuts around the matrix found in genuine turquoise. Zuni silversmiths spend years developing their own distinctive design. The earliest recorded Zuni silversmith learned the art from a Navajo who came to the Zuni Pueblo in 1872. Some designs are passed down from generation to generation, but most Zuni silversmiths strive to originate their own design. Zuni jewelry is most noted for two different styles of jewelry. Zuni inlay jewelry is created by designing the silver piece, usually with sterling silver channels inside the outline of the design. Each stone is then cut and ground and set into the channels in the silver. Zuni needle point jewelry is created by designing the sterling silver piece, and then cutting the stones to slender, pointed ends. Silver bezels are then made for each stone and soldered to the design before each stone is set. Petit point is very similar to Needle Point Indian Jewelry, however the stones are only pointed on one end and rounded on the other. redrocktrading.com offers a wonderful selection of Zuni Indian Jewelry.
