STERLING SILVER OVERLAY TECHNIQUE: In short, the overlay technique is created by cutting a design out of a piece of silver, the result being a negative design. The silver that is left after the design has been cut out of it is then soldered onto a sheet of plain silver and the inside of the design is typically hand-stamped with fine lines and oxidized to show up black against the polished silver. Hopi silversmith Anderson Koinva has mastered the overlay technique, using heavy 18 gauge sterling silver on the top design and 20 gauge on the bottom, ensuring a deep, defined design in each piece. He incorporates many of the traditional Hopi designs in his jewelry such as prayer feathers, water waves, whirlwinds, rain and lightning. All of Anderson Koinva’s Hopi Native American jewelry is signed and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
