,Zuni inlay jewelry describes a technique by which pieces of stone or shell are cut to fit into channels in the silver (also referred to as channel work). Each stone is cut, then ground to its final shape and set into the channels in the sterling silver. Some Zuni silversmiths also create their inlaid jewelry absent the channels, preferring to inlay the stones directly next to another stone. Many stories have been told describing the reasons why an artist makes a certain piece of Native American jewelry and the mystical significance a particular piece holds, however, the vast majority of Zuni Indian jewelry is made because the silversmith desires to express an artistic design using sterling silver and genuine stones. Put simply, it is the artist’s way of making a living.

Our collection of Zuni earrings are made of sterling silver and genuine turquoise, coral, jet, spiney oyster shell, lapis and other semi-precious gemstones. Zuni Indian jewelry is made on the Zuni Pueblo in northwestern New Mexico. The Zuni economy is fueled by the artistic creativity of its’ people. Zuni jewelry is what artists of the Zuni Pueblo are most known for, however there are also extremely talented fetish carvers, kachina carvers, potters and other arts and crafts. Most Zuni Indian jewelry is created by building the silver first and then cutting the stones and shells to fit versus the Navajo Indian jewelry which is typically built around the stone. Of course this is a rather vague generalization, but I think it is fair to say that when observing the differences between Navajo Indian Jewelry and Zuni Indian Jewelry, you could say that Zuni silversmiths are known more for their stone cutting than they are for their ornate silver work. Some of the most beautiful and intricate inlay jewelry as well as needle point jewelry is created by Zuni silversmiths.
